So now that we have gotten settled in a bit here at home the much awaited details are here!
The story starts with my regular Ob appointment Tuesday afternoon. The doctor is doing the regular check of the baby's position and can't feel the head down in the pelvis. I was somewhat surprised at this considering the week before she was head down. We'd been worried about position because she'd been turning so much. Most babies get in the head down position about 36 weeks and stay there. Not our little one. We decided she's a future gymnast with all the flipping about she did in the last month. So anyway, the doctor finds her head under my ribs on the right side and recommends making an appointment at the hospital for the next day to have her turned the rest of the way and have labor induced. The chances of the version being successful were very high, around 95 %. So we decide to go ahead and schedule the version. There weren't any appointments available for Wednesday, so the appointment was made for Thursday morning. We took the final belly shot the night before. Our baby was coming the next day!

We arrive at the hospital bright an early Thursday morning. They get us all set up with an ultrasound to pinpoint her exact position. Instead of being transverse as was expected from the appointment two days before, she'd turned all the way head up. Now she's full breech, with both feet down. The chance of a successful version is pretty slim at this point and they recommend a c-section. We decide to try the version with a c-section following if they aren't able to turn her. They take me into the operating room and administer a combined spinal epidural the numb me. The room was freezing and I couldn't stop shaking. Tristan waited outside (in detention) while the set me up. One of the fantastic nurses sat and held my hand, talking with me to distract me and help me relax (and get the shivers to stop). Once the epidural started to kick in I started to warm up. They had me lay down on my back (feels really weird to move positions when your butt is numb) and invited Tristan into the room. They once more set up the ultrasound machine, slopped on the jelly, and got to work trying to turn the kid. One doctor grabbed the head, one grabbed the butt. They tried three times,(felt like a really good massage- thank you drugs!) but this kid was not going to move. They started prepping me for the cesarean. It was all kinda a blur after that. I do remember feeling lots of pressure. I know when they baby came out because I heard all the aaahhh's from the doctors. Tristan was snapping away with the camera. This is the first view I got of my child. I love the stunned expression on her face. They carried her over to get her cleaned up while the surgery got finished.

By this time I was starting to get a little antsy. The rest of the surgery didn't feel so good. Tristan was trying to distract me by making me smile for pictures. He told me to pretend I was happy. The baby was here, after all.
The anesthesiologist gave me something to help keep me calm for the rest of the surgery. It made me kinda loopy, and caused some short term memory loss. I'm glad the pictures turned out, 'cause I could barely keep my eyes open. It took about an hour in the recovery room to kinda get my head back.
Our healthy baby girl was born at 9:53 am on Thursday February 12th, 2009. She weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 19 inches long. You can't see her dark hair in these pictures because of the hat. She scored a nine on both her one and five minute apgar tests. Once they wrapped her up she calmed down. Tristan was able to hold her and we enjoyed a her first few minutes adjusting to life outside the uterus. She just kept sticking her tongue out. Tristan thinks she's part reptile. I'm amazed at her beautiful eyes. (They're much easier to see when they're not cloudy with ointment.)

We spent an about an hour in the recovery room. Kalia was taken to the nursery to be given her first bath. We were reunited and taken up to the room we'd spend the next few days. The nurses were great. Every person that came into the room would tell us congratulations and exclaim how beautiful our little girl is. We're so proud of her! It's amazing that this little one is actually our child. It's kinda a surreal feeling. We love her so much!

Tristan actually left the room before the above picture was taken. In his place a time traveling 13 year old version of himself entered for the photo.
